Enercell USB Battery Pack – Charger Review

Enercell USB Battery Pack Charger Review: In my quest for a good, cost effective USB chargeable backup portable battery pack, USB charger and USB portable battery power supply, I came across this Enercell® Portable Power Bank. The Enercell product line is exclusive to Radio Shack. Kinda looks like they created the brand name by merging Energizer and Duracell?

My first impression of the Enercell® Portable Power Bank was how lightweight it is. In hand, this thing feels like an empty plastic case. I initially thought the batteries must not be included, but of course they are. The portable battery pack is small enough to fit comfortably in my pocket (about two thirds the length of a droid x2 smartphone, at the same width and thickness).

It features a flip out male USB dongle, used to charge it's internal Lithium Ion batteries via the USB port of any computer. On the opposite end is a female USB port, used to attach any five volt peripheral device you wish to charge or run from the Enercell. The Enercell comes with Mini USB, Micro USB and iPod/iPhone adapters. On the face of the case, is a button. Once this button is pressed, LEDs illuminate to show approximate charge of the internal pack. Each LED alternates from green to red.

The Enercell Battery output is rated at 5 Volts DC. Cell capacity is 1350 mAh, with an actual output around 800 mAh. Average anticipated run time is 4 hours from the pack.  NOTE: Total combined current should not exceed 1000 mAh for any device plugged into the pack.

I have personally used the Enercell multiple times, as both a charger and battery extender for my Droid X2, and Sansa Clip MP3 player with excellent results. In the case of the Droid X2, while My Tracks was running, battery life was extended by a couple of hours. In the case of the Sansa Clip+, the device never discharged during an 8 hour bicycle ride, while constantly playing music at over half volume.
