Common McAfee Security Center Problems And Solutions

These days most new computers come pre-installed with an operating system and certain important applications. These software programs may be a full version or an evaluation version valid for a limited period of time.

One such program that may come pre-installed with your new computer is a malware protection software such as McAfee Security Center.  If your computer does not come with a malware protection software pre-installed, then you may want to install one as it is critical that you do not operate your PC without having one of these tools. McAfee Security Center is a complete suite of protective tools such as antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware and anti-phishing products. It provides adequate protection to your system and is an overall a good product. However, sometimes there may be some issues related to this software as is true for many other security programs. For example, you may notice that your computer is slow, or the application is not working, or it could be that your subscription has expired. To get rid of these problems, you may need to uninstall McAfee security center from the PC. You may do so by using one of the following procedures:

  • You can remove McAfee Security Center by using the Add or Remove Programs utility which is a popular mode for uninstalling software. You can start this process from the Control Panel.  In the Add Or Remove Programs window that opens, browse through the Currently installed programs list and select McAfee Security Center. You must select all the products to ensure a complete uninstall of this software. Follow the screen instructions for removal and then complete the process by restarting your computer.
  • In case you find that some of the McAfee products have not uninstalled, you can follow the steps given below and then try again:
    • Open My Computer.
    • Look for the McAfee Program files folder.
    • Access the \Agent\App sub-folder.
    • Locate all the files with an extension .adf and delete them.
    • Once you have done this go to the Add or Remove Programs and redo the McAfee uninstallation.
  • Download McAfee Uninstaller: In case you fail to remove the McAfee Security Center by using the methods mentioned above, then you can opt for the automatic uninstall option provided by McAfee. A note of warning though, this option will not work on systems that have Windows 98 or ME installed on them. To use this option, you need to visit the official website of McAfee and download an application known as MCPR. You can use MCPR to uninstall McAfee products after making sure you have closed them.
  • Use Third-party Program uninstaller: If you still have problems, you may choose to use a good third-party program uninstaller tool to perform McAfee removal.

Finally, once you are through with the uninstallation process it is advisable to perform a thorough registry cleanup and repair using a good quality registry cleaner. This will take care of any left behind registry entries related to McAfee Security Center.
